Five last-minute solutions to protect your home from a hurricane that's best not to try

Hurricane Irma has made landfall in Florida, and thousands of people leave their homes to seek refuge from the storm. Every time this happens, there are those who insist on following last-minute tips to try to protect their house before closing the door. If it's any of these tips, you better not do it.

1.- Put valuable objects in the dishwasher
Rumor has it that the dishwasher is the best place to store our valuable belongings so they won't be damaged by water. Unfortunately, it is false. Dishwashers are designed to keep jets of water inside, but not to prevent a flood of water from entering outside.

2.-Put adhesive tape on the windows
The myth says that this way we relieve the tension of the glass and it does not break. The reality is that it breaks the same, but in larger pieces that are much more dangerous in case they fall on you.

3.-Leave some window open to “balance the pressure”
No, leaving a window half open will not prevent windows from breaking if the wind is strong enough. Doing it will only serve so that, in addition, water flows in through the window and it has more opportunities to break or to be blown off by the wind.

4.-Protect only the windows that face the sea
If you put special interest in protecting the windows of only one facade and forgot the others, you will not have achieved anything. Hurricane wind gusts never flow in one direction, and even if they did, flying objects often bounce off unpredictable paths.

5.-Lean on a door or window to compensate for excessive wind pressure
Although it has been said a thousand and one times that staying home during a hurricane is dangerous, there are still some people who refuse to leave their homes, especially in the Florida Keys, where tropical storms are not exactly new. If you are one of those stubborn, at least do not try to support your weight against a door that is about to burst from the effect of the wind. It will break the same, and possibly do the same to you in the process.
